UMO International Cartoon Competition

Bad Design Competition

Theme: Annoyances with day-to-day objects

The entries for these competitions can be accepted by email or through registered post. They will be exhibited on 3rd November 2005 on the World Usability Day. Further details of these competitions would be posted on www.usabilitymatters.org/blog

Social Issues

The following is list of ideas (grouped clearly under categories) we all have brainstormed in the inaugural meeting and a handful of them collected from the students of SV College of Architecture.

Lets keep the discussion alive and post ideas around these topics on Usability Matters group.

The aim is to address the finalized issues with design and find solutions.

Public Transportation

  • Seating in RTC buses for better leg room
  • Parking space and navigation standards in commercial complexes to avoid traffic jam
  • Design of seats for bus stops
  • Redesign of Seven Setter Autos for better flow of traffic and safety
  • How to curb smoking in public places?
  • Garbage disposal in trains

Traffic

  • Vehicles should stop at zebra cross lines and slowdown at speed breakers - better solutions?
  • Color of count down numbers at traffic signals. To be redesigned
  • Traffic control measures near schools

Public Services

  • Making e-Seva work better
  • Redesign of railway reservation application form
  • Redesign of Indian Railways reservation website
  • Redesign of Money Order form
  • Enhancing ATM(SBI bank) machine's Usability
  • RTA testing program – interface enhancement

Civic Behavior

  • Means to curb committing suicides from Charminar
  • Sticking bills in public areas
  • Discouraging public urination
  • Spitting in public spaces like staircases

Civic Amenities & Infrastructure

  • Redesign of drainage Manhole lid
  • Rainwater preservation mechanism

Personal Transportation

  • Riding against head lights at night - redesigning helmets or headlights?
  • Attending a cell phone with helmet while riding - redesigning helmets
  • Helmet design should help to use it in moderate rains
  • Seat burns when the bike is placed in sun

Day-to-day Objects

  • Re-design of coffee vending machines
  • Re-design T-Square to carry easily
  • Re-design of conventional weighing machines - to be able to read weight on my own.
  • Kimberly-Clark paper napkin dispensers look like heaters/blowers, and they dispense out 2-3 at a time
  • Bajaj Chetak - tilting and starting of vehicle

Cityscape

  • Redesign Architecture colleges in Hyderabad for better design and aesthetics
  • Means to ensure proper care of historical monuments

Signage

  • Consistency in Signage across government and private communications system
  • Indicate which train stops at which platform in railway stations

This list doesn't end here, we all can add more to this list.

You are encouraged to take up an issue of your interest and workout solutions by design. Participants from other cities can keep their thoughts flowing through discussions virtually. The final design solutions would be presented to NGOs and respective government representatives on the event day.

By the time we meet next, we should ideally be able to discuss on the design ideas for the issues taken up across categories.

Looking forward for conviction and commitment from each one of you in taking up responsibility for a social cause.

Hi. The position of rods to hold while standing is ridiculously behind in most RTC buses. often a lot of room gets wasted because there is no overhead rod to hold on to. The condition of Veera buses and Metroliners is much worse. the new middle-entrance buses are much better.
