Badly designed ATMs

Deepti Aggarwal - Hyderabad

I find the existing ATMs designed badly for the following reasons:-

Bad Designs

1. Security problems
ATMs require the customer to enter the card within a slot.  This old design makes it easy for attackers to attach some glue or trap and steal the card.

2. Waste of Paper
Reword the Balance Inquiry option to Current Account Balance.  The option to print receipts for balance inquiries is unnecessary.

3. Lack of informative messages
For example – the message ATM out of service does not convey the reason.  Is this due to a problem with the satellite link?  Is this due to lack of money?

4. Lack of customized service
ATMs do not provide an option to specify denominations (e.g. 100, 500, 1000, etc.) of the notes.  They also do not provide notes of 10 and 50 rupees.

5. Time consuming maintenance
When ATMs are short of money or specific notes, there is no automatic communication to the bank for a refill.
